Actual Steps for Memory Upgrade on Dell Laptop 'Dell 14'

This article explains the actual steps for upgrading memory on a Dell laptop 'Dell 14 DC14255' and how to select memory.

The laptop used this time is Dell's ' Dell 14 Laptop (DC14255)'.

More details are introduced here.

Here are the specs.
As I knew before purchasing, 16GB of memory is clearly the bottleneck.

Processor AMD Ryzen 7 250
Memory 16GB
Storage 512GB SSD
Graphics AMD Radeon™ Graphics

Here's the state with no software running. About half of the memory is already consumed.

And here's the state with browsers and editors open as usual.

It's already full.
If a web conference is added on top of this, it's too much.

Fortunately, if you have a compatible model like the Dell 14 or Inspiron 14 series, you can replace the memory, so I decided to upgrade to 32GB.

※Please note that this involves disassembly, so proceed at your own risk.

Here's the memory I prepared this time.

More details on how to select memory will be discussed later, but
I think it should be fine if you stick to 'DDR5・5600MHz・16GB(optional)・SODIMM(for laptops)・1R×8'.

This type of memory seems to be the standard.

Remove the 8 screws on the back with a Phillips head screwdriver.

The two orange screws were not completely removable.

Use a plastic opener to release the surrounding clips.
Always use a plastic tool. If you open it with a flathead screwdriver or similar, the main unit will get scratched.

As a side note, I use the following precision screwdriver set.
It comes with openers and other tools, so it's convenient to have one.

Even for business use, having 32GB of memory definitely provides more peace of mind.

How to Select Memory

Here are the essential specs for memory compatible with the Dell 14 DC14255.

  • Form Factor: DDR5 SODIMM (for laptops)
  • Transfer Speed: DDR5-5600
  • Rank Configuration: 1R×8 (While the cheaper 1R×16 version also works, using 1R×8 modules improves dual-channel operation stability)

And depending on your budget, I recommend 16GB for capacity.

It's better to match the memory capacity with two modules to ensure dual-channel operation at all times, allowing you to fully utilize the performance.

As in this case, a configuration of 16GB+16GB for a total of 32GB is highly recommended.

Regarding compatible memory, it's a good idea to open it up once before purchasing memory to check what memory is installed and if there are any empty slots.
