Compare the specs and usability of EOS R10 and PEN E-PL10!

We compared the actual units and usability of Canon's "EOS R10" and OLYMPUS's "PEN E-PL10".
Both are mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras, but Canon's EOS R10 allows you to enjoy photography more seriously, while OLYMPUS's PEN series gives the impression of being stylish and compact to carry.
In fact, that's pretty much the conclusion.
The price range is approximately 185,000 yen for the EOS R10 lens kit
and approximately 82,000 yen for the PEN E-PL10 double zoom kit (at the time of writing).
Given the price difference of more than double, comparing these two models might seem a bit harsh, but we hope this serves as a reference for those who are torn between a Canon mirrorless camera and an OLYMPUS PEN series camera.

Appearance
First, let's compare their appearances.
Here's what they look like from the front. (Click to enlarge)
Here's what the back (LCD panel side) looks like.
I think the biggest difference is the presence or absence of a viewfinder.
Since the R10 is also a mirrorless camera, what you see through the viewfinder is an electronic image, but when shooting outdoors in bright daylight, a viewfinder is easier to see.
By the way, it seems that PEN series cameras up to the PL8 model can also have an optional viewfinder attached.
OLYMPUS Electronic Viewfinder VF-3
Since the R10 has a viewfinder, you can keep information displayed on the LCD screen.
Of course, the R10 can also be used for shooting while looking at the LCD screen, just like the PL10.
Both have touch panels. They also support touch shutter.
Here's what they look like from diagonally above.
There isn't much difference in size for the bodies alone, but
the R10's lens is overwhelmingly large... or rather, the PL10's lens is just too compact.
The PEN E-PL10's standard lens is "14-42mm", while
the EOS R10's standard lens is "18-150mm", covering telephoto as well.
If you have the budget, Canon also offers smaller lenses that can make it a bit more compact.
Canon RF-S18-45mm F4.5-6.3 Lens.
When comparing with the PL10's telephoto lens (40-150mm) attached, it becomes roughly the same size as the R10.
Here's what they look like from above.
It's clear from above, but the grip feel is completely different between the R10 and PL10.
The R10 can be firmly gripped with the right hand, but the PL10 feels a bit like it might be dropped. This is unavoidable due to its compact size.
Both have AUTO and advanced shooting modes (P Tv Av M), which should be sufficient.
The R10 has two electronic dials, while the PL10 has one.
If you frequently use advanced shooting modes (P Tv Av M), you'll want two.

The EOS R10's LCD is a vari-angle type. You can extend it and tilt it up or down like this.
You can also turn it around for selfies.
The PEN E-PL10's LCD is a tilt-type. You can tilt it upwards like this.
And you can flip it downwards to face the opposite direction like this.
This tilt-type seems easier for selfies.
However, personally, the PL10's tilt mechanism feels too delicate and prone to breaking, so I'm hesitant to touch it too much, haha.
The manual even says "Do not touch this part."
Both the R10 and PL10 have battery and SD card compartments at the bottom.
Of course, both can be attached to a tripod.
Weight
Next, let's compare their weights.
Both with standard lenses, including battery and accessories (neck strap)

The R10 was 785g, and the PL10 was 516g.
As expected, the PL10 is lighter.
With the telephoto lens attached to the PL10, it's 622g, and with the standard lens also included, it's 721g.

If you're planning to carry a telephoto lens with the PL10, you might consider it "the same weight as the R10."
Image Quality / Actual Photos Taken
Which one is the "EOS R10" and which one is the "PEN E-PL10"?
Both were shot under almost the same conditions
(EOS R10: 38mm 1/160s f5.6 ISO-100)
(PEN E-PL10: 38mm 1/125s f5.6 ISO-100), but
The first image is the R10, the second is the PL10 The left is the R10, the right is the PL10 .
Although they are scaled down for the web, comparing the original data shows that both capture images equally beautifully.
Both were shot at 38mm, but the PL10's image is more magnified. This is due to the difference in "sensor size," which will be discussed later.
Pixel Count
The pixel count is
EOS R10: 24.2 megapixels
PEN E-PL10: 16.05 megapixels.
In terms of settings,
the EOS R10 can shoot at L size 6000×4000,
and the PEN E-PL10 can shoot at L size 4608×3456.
At this point, the R10 can be said to have an advantage.
Sensor Size
Next, the sensor size is
EOS R10: "APS-C"
PEN E-PL10: "Micro Four Thirds"
Generally, APS-C can be said to have an advantage.
Sensor size refers to the fact that a larger sensor makes it easier to blur the background, reduces noise, and provides a wider angle of view.
Conversely, a smaller sensor results in a more compact and lightweight camera.

Comparing the two sample images earlier, even though both were shot at 38mm, the R10's APS-C has a wider angle of view, and the PL10's Micro Four Thirds appears to have a narrower angle of view. This is due to this effect.
(Conversely, it can be said that a smaller sensor size is stronger for telephoto.)
There is a clear difference when compared to full-frame, but
since this is a comparison between APS-C and Micro Four Thirds, the difference might not be that significant.
So, the conclusion after comparing image quality is that the R10 has a theoretical advantage, but at first glance, they look similar.
Video Performance
Let's also touch a bit on video performance.
The EOS R10 offers:
Recording Format: MP4
Recording Quality: "4K 29.97fps", "4K (cropped) 59.94fps", "FHD 59.94fps"
and more. Each quality setting has two types: Standard and Lightweight.
The PEN E-PL10 offers:
Recording Format: MOV
Recording Quality: "4K 30fps", "FHD 60fps"
and more. For FHD and HD, you can choose from SuperFine, Fine, and Normal quality.
Most people will likely find FHD 60fps sufficient, so either should be fine, but the R10 can still shoot 4K at 59.94fps with "cropping (narrower angle of view)".
Also, the R10 saves in .mp4, while the PL10 saves in .mov.
Generally, .mp4 might be easier to handle...
That concludes the comparison between the Canon EOS R10 and OLYMPUS PEN E-PL10.
If you want to seriously enjoy photography, the "R10" is recommended for its rich settings and operability.
If you want to enjoy photography more casually, cutely, and compactly, the "PL10" should be perfectly enjoyable.
