Here's how to fix the issue where you can't go back by swiping left in the iPhone's standard Mail app, and instead, a read mark appears as shown in the image.
Settings
Go to Settings > Mail > Swipe Options
Set Swipe Right to "None".
This should allow you to go back smoothly with a right swipe.
To be precise, even if "Swipe Right" is set, you can still go back by swiping from the very edge of the screen, but since this gesture isn't used that often, I think it's fine to turn it off.
