[6-Year Review] Introducing Logicool's MX Keys: Appearance and Usability
![[6-Year Review] Introducing Logicool's MX Keys: Appearance and Usability](img/ogp.jpg)
In 2020, I purchased Logicool's MX series keyboard, the "MX KEYS".
Since then, I've used it diligently for 8 hours every day, and now I can't imagine being without its typing feel and usability.
Even if it breaks, I plan to buy the same one.
Why do I think so?
I'll introduce the MX KEYS' usability, device pairing, and its appearance after 6 years of use.
My Keyboard History
- Cheap Chinese one (approx. 2 years)
- Logicool K270 (approx. 3 years)
- MX KEYS (6 years)
I've also written a long-term review of the "MX ERGO" from the same MX series.
Please take a look if you're interested.

Appearance, Backlight, and Usability
First, let's look at its appearance.
The material is primarily plastic, but unlike cheap products, it has an aluminum-like finish with a smooth feel, a solid weight, and a premium look.
Its slightly rounded design also gives it a charming touch.
After 6 years of daily 8-hour use, it has become worn and faded, but it gives it a sense of character.
The key surfaces have a concave shape, which helps guide your finger to the center of the key.
The typing feel is shallow but has a certain firmness, providing a good rebound.
Even after 6 years of use, this rebound sensation has not diminished, and there are still no unresponsive keys.
While it may depend on usage, its durability seems quite high.
Here's what it looks like from the side.
The upper part seems to house the battery and other components, and this section creates the keyboard's angle.
There is no keyboard angle adjustment feature.
I think the angle is relatively small, so those who prefer a steeper angle or a flat keyboard might need to make some adjustments.
Here's what it looks like from above.
The top features a power switch and a USB-C port for charging.
The battery is built-in.
I've used it for 6 years, and I don't usually turn off the power switch, but the charge seems to last about 2-3 months.
In this regard, wouldn't you say its durability is sufficient?
The underside. There are 6 non-slip pads.
The MX KEYS engraving and marks indicating specifications, etc., are present.
Backlight illuminated.
It's hard to convey in photos, but it's quite beautiful.
You can dim the backlight with 'Fn+F6'
and brighten it with 'Fn+F7'.
The backlight brightness can be adjusted in 8 levels, from off to maximum.
If you install the "Logi Options+" software (mentioned later), the brightness level will be displayed on the screen when you change it.

Pairing and Dedicated Software 'Logi Options+'
The MX KEYS can be paired with up to 3 devices.
There are two pairing methods: Unifying (Logi Bolt for the current MX KEYS S, which is a dongle) and Bluetooth.
Pressing buttons 1, 2, or 3 instantly connects to the device paired with that number.
Long-pressing any of 1, 2, or 3 puts it into pairing mode, allowing it to be detected by Logi Options+ or Bluetooth and assigned to that number.
I use personal and work PCs on the same desk, so this feature is very useful.
This is the included Unifying receiver (dongle). (For the current MX KEYS S, it will be a Logi Bolt receiver).
With Logi Options+, you can pair MX KEYS and MX ERGO (mouse) to a single dongle, which means only one USB port is needed. You can also create a single set, like a dongle for your personal PC and a dongle for your work PC, making management very easy. (See below for details)
This is also a highly recommended feature.
Logi Options+
If you've bought a Logicool MX series product, I recommend installing Logi Options+.
Once installed, currently connected devices will be displayed.
Click MX KEYS to view details.
Click 'EASY-SWITCH' in the menu to check which devices are paired to 1, 2, and 3, and by what method.
The 'Settings' menu looks like this.
I usually keep my room bright, so I turn off the backlight to avoid unnecessary battery consumption.
Let's look at how to pair dongles and other devices.
From the Logi Options+ top screen, click "Add Device".
Under 'Select connection type', "Logi Unifying Receiver" and "Bluetooth" are displayed.
The "Logi Unifying Receiver" displayed here is the dongle currently connected to the PC.
For example, let's say you have an "MX KEYS" and an "MX ERGO (mouse)", and they each came with "Dongle A" and "Dongle B".
Pair MX KEYS's number 1 and MX ERGO's number 1 to Dongle A.
Then, let's say you want to pair MX KEYS's number 2 and MX ERGO's number 2 to Dongle B.
First, connect Dongle A to your PC and pair MX KEYS's number 1 and MX ERGO's number 1 with Logi Options+.
Next, connect Dongle B to your PC and pair MX KEYS's number 2 and MX ERGO's number 2 with Logi Options+. In this way, you can pair multiple Logicool devices to a single dongle.
Please note that some models only support Unifying receivers, while others only support Logi Bolt.
That concludes my 6-year long-term review of Logicool's MX KEYS!
Since it's wireless, your desk stays tidy, and it can be paired with multiple devices, making it ideal for creators and programmers, I believe.
While it may be pricey, it's an excellent product that offers high satisfaction with long-term use.
