Here's how to **disable the saved PDF from opening automatically** when saving in Word.

When saving a Word document as PDF,

All you have to do is uncheck 'Open file after publishing' and save.

Once you uncheck it, it seems to remain unchecked by default for subsequent saves. (The same applies in reverse)
